Project:
Renovation/Addition
Area:
20,450 SQ M
Completion Date:
January 2008
Description:
The Critical Care Wing addition and renovation at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital is an expansive project, which includes 17,650 SQ M of additional space and 2,800 SQ M of renovated space. One of the main goals of the project was to bring as much natural light into the core of the hospital as possible. The existing ICU, Recovery and Surgical Suites of the hospital were windowless - staff, patients and families could not experience the time of day or a change in the weather. EDA's design solution created two building blocks joined together by an Atrium. The Atrium brings light deeper into the floor plate so that all rooms have access to it. Turning the typical hospital plan "inside out" has rejuvenated the facility and greatly improved staff and patient morale.
