Description:
Warm, cozy, lived-in, a family home with a design edge best descirbes this custom residence designed and built on a rock outcrop, 200ft above the Gatineau River. The house was designed as a vacation retreat and eventual retirement home for the client. Constructed with an exposed structure and simple finishes, the style reflects their desire to create an informal home reminiscent of the three season cottage of the client’s childhood. The home takes advantage of the views and orientation, with extensive windows to the south and west and minimal openings to the north and east. The massing of the home steps from the large main floor, up to a small 3rd floor retreat. The stack-effect created by the massing and the large overhangs provide protection from rain and summer sun, allowing for natural ventilation. Great care was taken to integrate the home within the surrounding topography and landscape, minimizing site disturbance. This project represents an early example of web based communications. The home was designed and constructed while the client resided in the U.K., with web based design review and contract administration correspondence.
